How can I make my hair stick up without making it stiff or gross feeling?

I have my hair cut so it is longer in the front, and shorter in the back (emo/scene). I want to make the back stick up without making it stiff like gel does.

My hair is cut like this guy's, but i cant make it stick up like him.

i've had the same problem with the female version of that hair style...get some got2be gel and twist it at the ends. don't use too much of the product though! i hope you have better luck than me.
